COURSE DESCRIPTION
Seventh Grade Language Arts is an integrated approach to inspire, connect and prepare all students for college and post-secondary success. Students will find their English Language Arts classroom is one of instruction that provides them with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete in the 21st century. They will have ample opportunity to refine and master strategies that will enhance their ability to understand and analyze any challenging text, to write with clarity and voice, to speak and listen in order to communicate and work effectively with others, and to view media with a critical intelligence.

ASSESSMENT
Students’ grades will be determined by using the following categories and percentages:
Practice -- 30%
Performance (Mastery) -- 70%
Grading Scale: A (90-100) B (80-89) C (70-79) D (60-69) F (0-59)

You are responsible for reading and following the student handbook as well as classroom procedures and classroom rules. When you make a choice that violates classroom and/or school rules, disciplinary consequences will be implemented. PROCEDURES
Daily Required Materials:

Headphones (Wired only)
Black/blue pens or sharpened pencils

Google Classroom: All class and homework assignments will be listed in your Google Classroom. A link to the Google Classroom calendar will be located on my Teacher Connection page: www.tvcs.org. My Teacher Connection page may be found by clicking on the Middle School tab, then clicking on Teacher Connection, and finally on Wilfredo Velez. Students will receive their Google Classroom code on the first day of school.
Bell Ringer/Dismissal: All students are expected to enter the classroom quietly and begin working on the bellringer. There will not be class time allotted for the bellringer, so it is important to begin working on the bellringer as soon as you enter the room. Dismissal is at the end of the class. Please remain seated and quiet until I dismiss you. The area around your desk must be clear of all trash. This ensures a clean environment for the next group of students. I will dismiss you when the previous two expectations have been addressed.
Make-up Work: If you are absent from school, it is your responsibility to obtain make-up work upon your return. All class work and homework assignments are posted in your Google Classroom to assist you in being informed.
Late Work: All class work and homework assignments are due the next day unless specified. If you do not turn in your assignments on time, points will be deducted as follows: 1 day late earns a maximum of 60%, 2 days late or more is a 0%. If you choose not to complete homework in a satisfactory and timely manner, you should expect your work to be graded accordingly.

All important dates will be located in your Google Classroom. Please make sure you are informed of any upcoming due dates or events.

I am available to any student or parent requesting additional assistance or needing additional information. If you choose to email me, please remember to put “Student” in the subject line so your email will reach me through the VCS web filter. If you prefer to contact me by phone, please call the school office and leave a message requesting me to return your phone call. If I need to contact you, I will first try to contact you through email unless you have indicated a preference for phone contact on the return form.
